How much time does it take for you to get on your bike and ride away. Not much, right. A thief could also take your bike quickly, and no matter how fast you are, a bike thief is always faster than any errand you need to run. Get a coffee to go and deliver a package, or anything else you need to do. It only takes a short time for a sneaky thief to steal your bike and never return it. Bicycles and electric bicycles are great, but one problem is that they are very easy to steal. Thieves usually go for bikes that appear the easiest to steal because they are lazy and look for easy opportunities. Over 2 million bikes are taken every year in North America, and less than 5 percent of them are found again.
Although it may be impossible to completely stop a thief who is very determined, you can discourage many thieves by using a strong, well-made lock to secure your bike correctly. When you leave your bike alone, it's important to quickly lock it. It only takes a few moments, but helps keep your bike safe. These locks are really good and I have been using them. I've also added some advice for securing your bike correctly.
As of September 2023, we have included four new locks: the TiGr Mini, Abus Goose Lock, Kryptonite KryptoLok Combo U-Lock, and Hiplok Z Lok Combo Lock. We have also made changes to the prices and the availability of the product.

Which lock should you buy.
I believe you should use a U-Lock for security.
U-locks are the safest. A thicker U-lock is better, so a U-lock that is 16 millimeters thick is a better choice than a U-lock that is 14 millimeters thick, if everything else is the same. They could be a bit heavier, but they are not as heavy as a chain lock. That's why I only tested the thicker things that are available for purchase.
Chains can bend easily, but they weigh a lot. A chain lock is better to use on crowded bike racks or with thicker or cheaper bikes compared to a smaller U-lock. But, they are the heaviest kind of lock. I tried out the Evolution 4 1090 because it weighed only 6. 1 pounds and had decent security (though not as good as the Kryptonite New York U-Lock). I usually use chains for e-bikes with chunky frames like the Super 73 S2.
Foldable locks are small and convenient to carry around, but they are not very reliable in terms of safety. The pointy parts that hold the pieces together are not very strong and can be easily drilled through. However, they are small and convenient when attached to your bike. They are a good choice if you primarily use your bike for short stops at places like convenience stores or coffee shops. However, I want to mention that I wouldn't use them to keep my bike locked up all day. It's also simple to attach a U-lock to the lower part of your bike frame or carry something like the Hiplok on your person.
The lock that is not expensive but is of great quality.
The Kryptonite KryptoLok Standard is a type of lock.
The KryptoLok's U-bar is not as thick as my other favorite locks. This means it would be easier for a thief to cut through it compared to the other locks. However, it still provides a good level of security. For $35, this U-lock is a really good value. It's my favorite kind of bike lock and it's also not heavy, weighing only 2. 9 The lock has a bracket made by Kryptonite called Transit FlexFrame that helps you attach it to your bike's frame. This makes it convenient to carry while traveling in town. I don't really like the fabric straps that hold things together because they can get loose over time, but since this is a cheap price, I'll accept any type of bracket to hold it. Many cheaper locks do not come with a key.
The Abus Granit X-Plus 540 is a type of lock.
The Granit X-Plus 540 is expensive, but if you have a costly bike (or you really love it. ), you should think about getting this high-quality model. The U-bar on both sides of the lock go into the cylinder. This means that in order to open the lock, a thief would have to grind through it two times, once on each side of the top curve. This would double the amount of time the thief would have to spend bent over using a noisy angle grinder. The Abus metal bars are thinner than the Kryptonite New York, but the Abus mounting bracket is stronger because it uses screws to hold the bike tightly, while the Kryptonite uses straps that can slip. The Abus weighs 3. 3 pounds, while the Kryptonite weighs 4. 5
The top-rated lock for securing things together.
The Abus Steel-O-Chain 9809 is a type of chain lock.
The Steel-O-Chain 9809 is a chain that is not too heavy but is still very useful. It is more challenging to use chain links with angle grinders because it is harder to keep the chain stable. They are also easier to use than a U-lock and simpler to handle on a crowded bike rack. This thing is 4. 5 feet long and weighs 6. 8 It is also very secure because it has 9-millimeter-thick square chain links. Nowadays, the chains on bikes are covered in cloth to protect your bike's paint or surface from getting scratched by the metal parts.
A lock that also keeps your front wheel safe.
The Kryptonite Evolution Mini-7 comes with a flexible cable.
The New-U Evolution Mini-7 has two locks in the key cylinder, so a bike thief would have to make two cuts to break it. The tubes are 13 millimeters thick. That's smaller than the 16 millimeters thickness of the Kryptonite New York. Also, because it's a "Mini", the loop of the U is narrower. However, the cable that comes with it can be passed through the front wheel of your bike, allowing you to secure it without needing to bring another lock. (You can find more advice on how to secure your bike at the end of this article. )
A necklace that you can put on and wear.
Hiplok Gold is a highly secure bicycle lock that provides maximum protection for your bike.
The Hiplok Gold is a bike chain that weighs 4. 8 pounds and can also be used as a belt. You don't have to put it in a bag or tie it around your bike's frame. If your waist is between 30 and 44 inches, you can adjust the item to fit your body and wear it while you ride. When you want to secure your bicycle, the chain that is connected to the belt is very safe. Here is a video that shows how it fits and works. The lock for the bike is 33. 5 inches long, which is a bit small, but it should be fine for most situations.
Simplest Lock to Bring
Hiplok DX is a type of bike lock that offers high security for your bicycle.
Hiplok's most durable U-lock doesn't have to be attached to your bike when you're not using it. It has little hooks that allow you to attach it to a belt or a strap on your backpack. It is very thin, only 14 millimeters, and it weighs only 2. 4 pounds because it is a small U-shaped lock. It is even shorter than the short Kryptonite Evolution Mini-7 by 2. 8 centimeters and shorter than the Kryptonite New York by 5. 3
You may not be able to put the lock through the bike frame and back wheel to attach them both to your lock-up spot. This is especially true if the spot is a thick post or bike rack with very thick bars. If you have a problem, use the Hiplok with a chain, another lock, or a cable attached to your front wheel.
How to Use a Lock - Simplified Instructions
Here are some easy tips for securing your belongings.
No matter what kind of lock you choose, make sure it can go through your bike and lock it to something sturdy like a bike rack or a strong fence. Also, it should go through the triangle part of your bike frame and the spokes of your back wheel. The picture above illustrates this technique. Make sure to take off any extra stuff from your bike before you go.
Put the lock through the open sections. Bikes can be taken apart easily. So, when you lock up your bike, put the lock through the part of the frame called the rear triangle. Make sure to also attach both wheels to the lock. You can see how to do this in the picture above. It is very simple for thieves to take an unprotected front wheel, especially if the wheel has a quick-release clamp. Some people use two locks for extra security. You can also buy cables to use with any of the locks I mentioned.
Make sure you keep your U-lock off the ground. Thieves enjoy stealing bottle jacks, which are typically used for lifting cars, and hiding them in the letter U. With enough force, the jack can unlock and open the lock. If you lift the U-lock up from the ground, it becomes difficult for them to do this. You should look for a U-lock that has very little extra space inside the U shape. If there is not much extra space, it will be harder for thieves to insert crowbars or other tools.
Check out the place where you want to park before you actually do it. Criminals sometimes remove poles and signposts from the ground and then put them back later. They just need to wait until you leave after locking your bike. Then, they can lift the post out of the hole and take your bike without using any tools or making any noise.
Take a look at bike racks, especially if you notice tape wrapped around them. Some bike thieves use saws to break bike racks. They cover up the broken part with tape to hide the damage. When bike owners leave their locked bike unattended, a thief can easily remove the tape, forcefully separate the bike rack, and take your lock out to steal the bike.
