The findings from Steam's September hardware survey are now available. Even though it's not the most important thing in the PC gaming world, it gives us a good idea of the things gamers are using, like the computer parts and programs.
In September, there is a new best graphics processing unit. The Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 is currently the top graphics card according to a survey. It moves the old top-ranked card, the respected GTX 1650, to second place.
The RTX 3060's popularity increased by 1. 4% from one month to another. That is the biggest increase compared to all graphics cards that use DirectX 10 or newer. That means it has a really big 6. 27% of the total. But why did the price increase suddenly. The obvious answer is that the price of an RTX 3060 has dropped significantly from its highest point during the years of high demand for mining and shortages caused by the pandemic. If you read our review of the RTX 4060, you will see that it doesn't offer a significant improvement in performance compared to the RTX 3060. The RTX 3060 12GB is still a good choice for gamers who don't want to spend too much money. It might take a while before there is a better option, considering how many people still like the GTX 1060 and RTX 2060.
The rest of the information about the GPU is not surprising. The RTX 4060 and RTX 4060 Ti will become more popular over the next few months and years, while AMD's cards are having difficulties gaining attention. The RX 580 is a very popular graphics card made by Radeon. It has been around for six years. The only card from the RX 7000-series on the list is the RX 7900 XTX. The Radeon RX 7600 is not included in the list, but because it is cheaper, it will likely become more popular than AMD's most expensive card once it is added.
In the past few months, I have been anticipating more people getting Windows 11. No, it hasn't. In September, Windows 10 gained more users while the other software lost some users. That is a bit confusing. Gamers are happy or don't see a good enough reason to change to Windows 11 as long as Windows 10 still gets security updates from Microsoft.
On the CPU side, the most noticeable change is that more systems now have CPUs with 6 cores. They comprise almost 36% of systems. The number of 4-core systems is getting smaller. The amount of CPUs with 8 cores decreased slightly. This is probably because Intel's 12th and 13th Gen CPUs have more cores. The number of systems with 10, 12, and 16 cores has gone up.
Intel is still the leader in the market. It has its CPUs in more than double the number of systems compared to those with AMD CPUs.
Surprisingly, the amount of space for storing data in gaming systems is getting bigger. More than 55% of the machines that were examined had more than 1 terabyte of storage. With the prices of 1TB SSDs dropping significantly in recent months, it is now more affordable than ever to add an additional drive to your computer. And as games need more and more space on your computer, this is a trend that will keep happening. Valve should include two terabytes (2TB) and higher capacity options in the four terabytes (4TB) and above categories.
Once again, the Steam Hardware Survey is not a very precise survey, but since it has a large number of users, it shows us a glimpse of the gaming devices being used at a specific time.
Basically, Nvidia graphics cards are more popular than AMD's. Gamers tend to keep their graphics cards for a long time. The number of cores and storage in gaming systems is increasing. Windows 11 is not very impressive.
